CTE UPDATES

HHS CTE Engineering/Manufacturing Sophomores visited Vicor, a leading, global power technology company.  This was a great opportunity for students to experience manufacturing in the US!  They heard from their Sr. Director Operations, VP Quality, VP Manufacturing, an Automation Engineer and a Manufacturing Engineer before receiving a tour of the factory.  The day ended with lunch and a question & answer session.  Thank you Vicor for welcoming our students and providing them with such an amazing learning opportunity.

On Thursday, May 1st, Mrs. Johnston’s Senior CTE Biomedical Innovations class formally presented their Capstone Projects at a Showcase held in the HHS Library.  Families, mentors, teachers, and friends were all present to celebrate.  The event marked the culmination of months of hard work, late nights, breakthrough ideas, and dedicated research.  It was a day to celebrate not only the projects, but the people behind them.  These students represent why Haverhill High is such a great place to learn and grow.  Capstone projects represent more than just academic milestones—they are a demonstration of the knowledge, creativity, and critical thinking that each student has cultivated throughout their time here.  These projects were diverse in scope, rich in insight, and often, deeply personal.  The students took on real-world problems, wrestled with uncertainty and frustration, and pushed boundaries.  They turned concepts into action, and got to share their journey—and solutions—with peers, mentors, family members, friends, and the broader community.  We are so proud of our seniors!  Below is a list of projects presented:

Tiah Tarabay- The Science of Deception: Polygraph Tests

  • A research study examining the accuracy of the controversial truth test

Rachael Barman- Flowing with Danger: E.Coli Contamination In The Merrimack River

  • A 12 week study of collecting samples from the Merrimack River and testing them for E.coli

Sophia Ciccariello- Behind the Scrubs: An Examination of What’s it’s like to be a Nurse and the Burnout They Sometimes Face

  • A job shadow experience in a local community hospital

Cecilia Geyer- Calypso Sun Protection

  • An informational app developed to inform teens about staying safe in the sun

Andrew Pruett- Seasonal Spread: An Exploration of the Dynamic Microbiome at Haverhill High School

  • A survey of the changing nature of microorganisms through the seasons

Riley Bradish-  Scanning the Future: The Power of Job Shadowing in Choosing a Career in Ultrasound Technology

  • The Positive Effects of a Job Shadowing Experience in Ultrasound Technology

Jacob Staples- Game Changer: An Innovation in Lacrosse Helmet Safety

  • An examination of a revolutionary helmet in protecting what matters

Arianna Ortega- Green Scaffolds:  Harnessing Plant Structures for Organ Engineering

Vasiliki Gioldasis- Parabens in Your Palette: The Hidden Ingredient in Cosmetic Powders

  • An analysis of the presence and effects of parabens in cosmetic powders

Katie Dalphin- Opening Doors to Discovery: Making Science Accessible to All

  • A case study of one’s student’s journey to create equal access for all in science

On April 11, Career Technical Education seniors in the Information Technology pathway and the Computer Science & Web Development pathway participated in a virtual guest speaker event hosted by Recorded Future, a cyber security company based in Somerville, MA. Students had the opportunity to learn about current and growing trends in the area of Internet security; to discuss various post-secondary pathways leading to employment in the industry and to ask questions about the industry. A huge thank you to Raphaelle Charbit, Cassidy O’Hearn and Erin Silvestri for their efforts to connect our students to industry professionals.
