CTE UPDATES

Haverhill High School CVTE Sophomores in the Information Technology and Computer Science & Web Development programs had the opportunity to tour the Boston Dynamics lab in Waltham.  Students also toured their robot museum and had a demonstration of Spot!  Thank you Boston Dynamics for providing our students with this amazing learning opportunity.  For more information about HHS CTE work-based learning experiences, contact Lisa Hunt at lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.

Mrs. Johnston’s CTE Biomedical Science Freshmen had a fantastic time at MIT Koch Institute for Integrated Cancer Research on Thursday. They spoke with Dr. Jose Ortiz about his work in studying how maternal diets during pregnancy can lead to colon cancer later in life. He also discussed his daily roles and responsibilities and work schedule as well as his path into medical research. Being bilingual, Dr. Ortiz easily communicated in both English and Spanish. Students also performed a lab experiment to simulate new chemotherapy delivery methods and took a tour of research labs, where they saw the latest equipment and methods like flow cytometry as well as the scientific posters of each research lab. They also reviewed the basics of cancer and why it is so difficult to treat. Students also had a few minutes to explore the Broad Museum of Biomedical Science. It was a fun day full of learning in one of the greatest academic centers in our nation. Our students were very fortunate and we thank all the scientists at MIT for giving us a chance to view their work up close.

HHS CTE Biomedical Science Juniors had the opportunity to visit Worcester Polytechnic Institute.  They attended an information session to hear about the offerings at WPI and then toured the campus.  It was a great opportunity for students to see what it would be like to attend a 4-year private college.  For more information about CTE Work-Based Learning opportunities, contact Lisa Hunt at lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.
