COUNSELING

It is course selection time! Students should communicate with their teachers if there are electives in a specific department they are interested in taking. Once teachers have made all recommendations in our system by January 23rd, school counselors will begin meeting with students from January 27th- February 13th to ensure all graduation requirements are satisfied and change these recommendations into course selections. Here are the links to the course selection guide for students in Grade 9 moving to Grade 10.

School counselors may meet with students again in April-May to review any potential conflicts within student schedules and make adjustments so we do not have a rush to schedule in August/September. There is no guarantee that your student will get into any class after the start of the school year. Schedules are not released until late in August.
Selecting what you want to take now, is key to ensuring you get an appropriate schedule for next year, which in turn limits unnecessary disruptions to student schedules in the fall.

Therapist Speaker Panel

CTE Healthcare Occupations students were fortunate to hear from professionals in the fields of therapy.  John Quevillon, the Regional Pulmonary and Respiratory Services Director for Atlas Healthcare and Kimberley Cook, Occupational Therapist and owner of Angel Care Kids Therapy Center participated in a panel discussion with Freshmen in the Healthcare Occupations program. Students learned about career pathways for Occupational therapy and Respiratory therapy as well as educational pathways.  Mr. Quevillon and Ms. Cook were gracious enough to share career highlights, job duties as well as sharing their experiences as managers involved in hiring staff. Their advice on professionalism was valuable for students who will be entering the workforce.  We thank them for sharing their time with our students.

Museum of Printing Field Trip- Graphic Design and Visual Communication

HHS CTE Graphic Design and Visual Communication Students visited the Museum of Printing here in Haverhill on Wednesday. The museum president and historian Frank Romano presented to students about the history and importance of typography in graphic design.  Followed by a trip through the museum learning about the history of printing, seeing early hand scribed bibles from the 1300 and 1400’s and other historic documents.  Students enjoyed demonstrations on the workings of early newspaper and other printing presses and got to ask questions of experts about early photography, typewriters and other technologies used by graphic and print designers throughout history.  Students were invited to visit again for workshops on using wood carved and other historic printing and graphic tools.  Today in class students could be heard discussing in depth their typography choices on current projects.  Maggie Rizzo, current Graphic Design student called the experience “Ravishing”. The students worked as a team to help organize the shipment of sweatshirts that just arrived! It was a great experience for all.  We would like to thank all of the Museum of Printing volunteers who shared their time to make this day special for our students!

WPI Biomed/Engineering Field Trip

HHS CTE Juniors in the PLTW Biomedical Science and Engineering/Manufacturing programs had the opportunity to visit Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Students learned about the admissions process, toured the beautiful campus, and heard directly from current WPI students about their experiences.

WPI is a global leader in project-based learning and a top-tier technological university built on the principle that students learn best by applying theory to real-world problem solving. One highlight of the visit for both staff and students was learning about WPI’s major project experience, where all students have the opportunity to travel abroad and collaborate on community-based projects that make a real impact.

A huge thank you to WPI for hosting us and inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators!

Biobus Field Trip

On Thursday, December 4th , Mrs. Johnston, Miss Wilwerth, Miss Steinbaugh, and their CTE Biomedical Science and Biology students boarded the Bio bus for a cell celebration! They swabbed their own cheek cells and examined them with professional microscopes. They also examined various plant and protist cells and even looked at hair, skin and clothing with the powerful microscopes on the bus. The bus and the scientists have been all over the Northeast on recent trips, from New York City to Boston and now up to Haverhill. It was a great opportunity for students to use professional equipment and speak to real scientists who love their jobs! We are so grateful to the entire Biobus team for a wonderful experience and we can’t wait for next year’s visit!

Students solve Biomed

CTE Biomedical Science juniors in Mrs. Bamford’s class partnered with Sanofi, a global leader in developing medicines and vaccines, to tackle a real-world industry challenge. This year, students were asked to design a creative, accessible, and medically accurate way for doctors to explain to patients why a medication used to treat Type 2 inflammatory diseases—such as eczema and asthma—is more effective than other treatment options based on how it works within the immune system. Students applied their scientific knowledge while problem-solving, collaborating, and communicating their ideas clearly. These are essential skills for success in STEM and biomedical careers.

RADIOLOGY GUEST SPEAKER

CTE Biomedical Science sophomores in Mrs. Bamford’s class had the opportunity to hear from Michael Soden, Program Director of Nuclear Medicine at Salem State University and a working professional in the field.

Mr. Soden introduced students to careers in nuclear medicine and medical imaging, including X-ray, MRI, CT, mammography, and ultrasound. He shared how these pathways can offer meaningful, in-demand healthcare careers that often require less time in school and can be more cost-effective than many traditional routes into medicine.

Most importantly, he provided students with practical, real-world advice about the many paths they can take to enter these fields and what working in medical imaging is really like.

Thank you, Mr. Soden, for giving our students such valuable insight into healthcare careers and helping them see what’s possible beyond the classroom!

Brain Autopsy

How many people can say they have held a human brain in their hands?  Several students in the CTE Biomedical Science and Healthcare Occupations programs can! On Thursday, December 18th, Mrs. Johnston and Miss Willwerth brought interested 18- year old seniors on a field trip coordinated by Dr. Jeffrey Gerson from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell to view a brain autopsy at the VA Hospital Brain Bank in Bedford, MA.  The study was focused on determining if the patient had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a condition caused by repetitive head injury.  Students respectfully viewed doctors performing the autopsy to see any pathologies of the patient.  They were able to reference parts of the brain they learned about in class to the living tissue before them. The experience was completely hands-on and students were also able to question the doctors and researchers about how they got into this type of research and future opportunities in the field. It was an incredible opportunity to apply their learning to a real world event. This field trip was sure to have lasting impacts on students and remind them to really care for their brain and wear protective equipment in contact sports because brain damage often has lasting impacts that cannot always be seen on the outside in the moment it occurs.  We thank the doctors at the  Brain Bank and Dr. Gerson for allowing high school students to have this amazing experience!

New England Invents

CTE Sophomores in the Information Technology and Computer Science & Web Development programs participated in a discussion with George Peters, President of New England Invents.  During their Entrepreneurship class with Mr. Roberts, Mr. Peters discussed the importance of entrepreneurialism and intellectual property.  He explained the difference between working for yourself vs. working for a company and that when you work for yourself you have to be able to quickly share your ideas with others (and have a strong “elevator pitch”).  Students were engaged and learned a lot of important information.

CNA Pinning Ceremony

On December 22, 2025, the CTE Healthcare Occupations program held their annual Pinning Ceremony for the Class of 2025.  A pinning ceremony is a ceremonial rite of passage; certifying completion of a rigorous Certified Nursing Assistant Program; and successful completion of both a written exam and a skills demonstration. Completion of this program allows students to sit for the Massachusetts Certified Nurse Aide examination with both a written and a skills test.

The Haverhill High School CTE Healthcare Occupations Program follows both the DESE and Department of Public Health Standards and includes classroom theory, lab and clinical competencies.  It encompasses a 270 hour program; and includes certification in CPR, First Aid, OSHA, Medical Terminology and Dementia Training.

Sixteen students earned completion certificates and several who have already passed the exam received their Certified Nursing Assistant pins.

YWCA

CTE Juniors in the Healthcare Occupations program were fortunate to learn about Body Image, Self Esteem and Self Care from representatives from the YWCA.  Students learned techniques to feel better about themselves and deal with stress.  This is especially important for these students pursuing careers in the caring industry, where they will be helping others in many different ways!  Students were also fortunate to hear from Madonna Maldonado, a Senior in the CTE program, who shared information from her Capstone project related to teen relationships.  Thank you to all who shared their knowledge and experiences with our students!
