Congratulations to the Hillies Swim & Dive team!

STATES RECAP‼️

We had an excellent day for races today, despite states being pushed back a full week, we still finished 7th overall, topping our last year’s finish of 9th!

Highlights:
200 medley relay – The relay of Miles Bunyar, Brian Story, Levi Abrams, and Colby McLaughlin placed 7th, dropping just under a full second with a time of 1:41.91.
200 free – Miles placed 9th with a speedy time of 1:47.75.
200 IM – Brian placed 2nd with a PB of 1:55.76, breaking a 24 year old school record!
500 free – Carter placed 15th with a PB of 5:12.06, scoring himself 2 points for the team individually.
200 free relay – The relay of Colby, Levi, Wilco Zbitnoff, and John Papageorgiou scored a tie for 9th place, with a time of 1:34.58.
100 back – Miles swam a 55.01 to claim 7th place, and Colby swam a PB of 57.78!
100 breast – Brian lowered his own school record from a 1:00.06 to a 59.20, placing 4th!
400 free relay – The relay of Miles, Wilco, John, and Brian lowered their recently set school record down from a 3:20.01 to a 3:19.59, placing 4th!

Amazing job boys! Great way to end the season!!

On Tuesday, January 21st, Mrs. Johnston’s CTE Biomedical Science class had the privilege of learning about Biomechanics from Dr. John Gallagher, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at  Merrimack College.  Dr. Gallagher discussed how engineers use biomimicry to produce designs that use the wisdom of nature to solve real world problems- everything from airplanes designed like a bird’s wing to make-up that mimics the reflective scales of blue butterflies.  He also discussed studying the human body to figure out what loads it is meant for and how this relates to sports medicine and medical devices to heal injuries.  He further discussed engineered materials such as nitinol that take on different characteristics at different temperatures.  Students were delighted to see an example of nitinol coiled up at one temperature and automatically converted to a totally different form at a different temperature.  This material has medical applications such as stents, where the device will be coiled up in the cold operating room and spring open to unclog an artery in the warm human body.  Finally, he discussed what the day in the life of a Biomechanical Engineer is like.  We are very grateful to Dr. Gallagher for his exceptional talk.

Mrs. Johnston’s Biomedical Science Freshmen welcomed Dr. Rickey Caldwell, Chair of the Department of Engineering at Merrimack College on Tuesday, January 28th.  Mr. Ashbrook’s Computer Science & Web Development Sophomores and Ms Dalphin’s Engineering Freshmen also participated.  Dr. Caldwell discussed everything from courses needed to be successful in college to future salaries of different types of engineers ranging from Biomechanical to Computer Engineering as well as what types of benefits students should look for in professional careers.  He brought two robots: Darwin (small mobile soccer-playing robot) and Spot, a load carrying and rescue dog.  Students had great fun walking Spot up and down the stairs and experimenting on how high an obstacle Spot could climb.  Dr. Caldwell is an engaging speaker and students were enthusiastic to participate.  We anticipate that Dr. Caldwell will continue to partner with our CTE programs and will return with his robot team at our Career Fair in May.  Thank you Dr. Caldwell!  For more information about CTE Work-Based Learning opportunities, contact Lisa Hunt at lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.

HHS Intern Spotlight! Chromebook Repair Interns from the CTE Computer Science and Information Technology programs. They’ve been hard at work, gaining hands-on experience while assisting the Haverhill Public Schools IT Department. From diagnosing issues to repairing Chromebooks, they’ve played a vital role in keeping student technology up and running!

Congratulations to Ryan, Andrew, and Mike for their dedication and outstanding work throughout their internship. Keep up the great work!

Career Technical Education Freshmen in the Information Technology and Computer Science & Web Development programs were fortunate to have Tim Howard, President and CEO of RMON Networks share his experiences with them.  He shared his career path and how he started and built his own business.  He also spoke about the importance of focusing on writing and communication skills, which are just as important as students’ technical skills.  Thanks Mr. Howard for spending part of your day with us!  For more information about CTE Work-Based Learning opportunities, contact Lisa Hunt at lhunt@haverhill-ps.org.

Career Technical Education Healthcare Occupations Sophomores had the opportunity to visit Merrimack College.  Students attended an information session and heard about the offerings provided there and then received a walking tour throughout the campus, with a special focus on their healthcare building and simulation labs.  The day ended with lunch provided by Merrimack College in Sparky’s Place and many smiling faces!  Thank you Merrimack College for an amazing visit!
