CTE UPDATES
HHS CTE Healthcare Occupations Sophomores visited the Massachusetts General Hospital Russell Museum and Ether Dome. During the visit, students learned about healthcare history and innovations. An outstanding aspect of the day was hearing from three MGH professionals: Director of the Nurse Residency program, a Medical Laboratory Scientist and blood transfusions, and a Respiratory Therapist. These professionals were able to share amazing advice for our students as they move forward in their educational and career paths. Thank you MGH for an amazing learning opportunity for our students!
HHS CTE Juniors in the Information Technology and Computer Science & Web Development programs visited Amazon Robotics. Students learned how Amazon is using technology to make their processes as efficient as possible and the many different careers needed to make that happen. Students were also provided with a tour of the manufacturing facility where the robots are designed, built, tested and shipped. Special thanks to Ryan Clarke for coordinating this great opportunity for our students!
HHS CTE Sophomores in Mrs. Bamford’s class toured the University of New Hampshire campus! Students attended an information session to learn about all the programs available and then had special exposure to the Speech Language Pathology program by Professor Laura Gonnerman. Students then walked the campus with a current Sophomore and ended their visit with lunch in the campus dining hall. Thank you UNH for a great visit!
On Wednesday, April 2nd, CTE Senior Biomedical science student, Katie Dalphin, achieved a milestone in her capstone project on increasing accessibility in science. With the support of her teacher, Mrs. Johnston, she was able to welcome Dr. Mona Minkara, a professor of Biomedical Engineering at Northeastern University, to speak to Biomedical Science, Health Occupations, and AP Biology students about her experiences as a blind scientist. Dr. Minkara was extremely inspiring and motivating to students. She reminded them that sometimes what seems like a disability can be an advantage and that the expectations of others do not have to be the expectations we hold of ourselves. She discussed how finding new ways to solve problems made her a creative person, and that has helped her solve scientific problems. Students were encouraged to follow their dreams, no matter the challenges and to try new things. Students were also motivated to seek out new opportunities in the future like NSF REU, a summer research program for college students. Students had the opportunity to ask questions, see interesting video clips of her adventures all throughout the world and in zero gravity and learn how navigating life as a blind person is. She reminded students to be empathetic to others and to never limit themselves. At the end of the presentation, students even got the chance to speak with Dr. Minkara one on one if they wanted. It was a truly wonderful event and we are so grateful to Dr. Minkara and Katie.
