  • Principal’s Weekly Update- November 3, 2017

    This has been an incredibly difficult week at Haverhill High. On Sunday evening, Dasia Houtman Routier from our senior class died in a motor vehicle accident. We opened our doors Monday evening October 30th  for our students to meet with our counselors to help them through the shock of this sudden loss in any way we could. All week we offered counseling at any time during the school day for anyone who was struggling. Our counselors will always be available in the weeks ahead to help any student who needs assistance.  I want to take a moment to thank our counselors and administrators for being a great source of strength and support to our students and staff.

    The wake for Dasia is being held today Friday from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Gondin-Carneval Funeral Home at 129 Kenoza Avenue. On Monday, we will hold a memorial ceremony at 5:00 p.m. here on campus in the auditorium lobby.

    HHS Term I Report Cards Issued

    Due to school being canceled on Monday and Tuesday, Term One closed today Friday, November 3rd. Our new report card will be electronically distributed via the parent portal on Monday, November 13th. Students without internet access will be given a paper copy. If you need a paper copy please visit the HHS Main Office and add your name to the report card issued log.

    First Term Parent Teacher Conferences (PTC) 11/16

    Term 1 report cards will be issued on 11/9. Term 1 PTC will be held 11/16 from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm. Sign ups forms will be sent home with students on 11/9 and will also be sent home electronically as well. I encourage all parents to sign up to meet with your child’s teachers.     Seniors-Yankee Candle Fundraiser

    Seniors Class of 2018: The Yankee Candle Fundraiser has been extended until Wednesday, November 8th.  Students cansee Mrs. McIntyre in K30 to drop off forms or to get additional copies of the paperwork. This fundraiser can help reduce the cost of class dues.

    MCAS ELA and Math Re-Test

    Reminder to all students taking the MCAS ELA retest –students should report to the Cafeteria on Wednesday, Thursday and the following Tuesday, November 8th, 9th and 14th  promptly at 7:25 a.m. for the MCAS ELA retest.

    The individual MCAS results from the 2017 ELA, Math and Science have been received from last spring and will be mailed home in the next few days.

    Messages from the Athletic Department:

    This afternoon (Friday, November 3rd) the new Unified Basketball team will host its first ever game her at Haverhill High. The Hillies will take on Methuen in the main gym at 4:00 p.m. Please come by and cheer them on in their first season home game.

    HHS Football

    Tonight the Hillie Football team will take on Peabody at Trinity Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.

    HHS Cheerleading

    This Sunday, our Hillies Cheerleading Team will compete in the MVC Championship at Central Catholic High School. Performance will be at approximately 1:00 p.m. Head over and watch the Hillies compete for the MVC title! Good luck ladies!

    HHS Girl’s Swimming and Diving

    On Sunday our Hillie Girls Swim and Dive Team have their MVC Championship meet at Worcester Polytech Institute on Sunday! Wishing them and all our teams much success!

    Fine Arts Department

    Our first show of the school year is just around the corner. The Class of 2018 will be presenting an evening of theatre featuring The Philadelphia, The Universal Language and The Real Inspector Hound – The performances are on November 15th at 7:00 p.m., November 17th at 7:00 p.m. and November 18th at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the HHS Auditorium. Tickets are $8.00 for general admission and $5.00 for students and seniors.

    Zombie Dress and Draw-A-Thon

    Last Friday our Hillie Fine Arts Department held a Zombie Dress and Draw-A-Thon. The end product is positively fantastic! Due to the weather earlier in the week they have changed the opening of the exhibit at the NECC Art Gallery to Tuesday, November 7th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Congratulations to those who participated.

    Last Day of School- June 2018

    Our last day of school is now scheduled on Wednesday, June 13, 2018

    MCJROTC Thanksgiving Day Food Baskets

    Help us help families in need this Thanksgiving. Our ROTC students under the direction of Major Martin will be collecting canned food goods (ex. canned vegetables, soups, etc.) and boxed items (ex. Brownie mix, stuffing mix, cake mix, etc.) from November 11th through November 15th. The collection bins will be set up in the main office and outside the cafeteria..

    Adult Education Classes

    Education is for Adults too!  Continue learning through these Free Education Opportunities for Parents/Guardians/Adults:

    High School Equivalency Preparation: It’s never too late to learn and earn your diploma. A high school diploma is the gateway to better jobs, training, and college. Morning classes 9am – 12pm.     Transition to College Program: Have you wanted to go to college, but worry that you have been out of school too long? Or do you feel like you need an academic boost before you take college classes? If so, the Transition to College Program at Northern Essex Community College is for you! If have a high school diploma (from any country) or a High School Equivalency diploma, and if you can speak and read in English, you may qualify for this FREE college prep program. Please call Alisa Povenmire, Transition to College Coordinator, at 978-659-1272, or emailapovenmire@necc.mass.edu, for more information.

    Information for Seniors
    • College admission representatives are wrapping up their visits HHS this fall.  All scheduled visits are listed in Naviance under the “Colleges” tab.  Students can sign up to meet with a college representative directly through Naviance or by signing up in the counseling office.  Students must sign up a minimum of one day in advance and will receive a pass to attend this appointment in their first period class.  Representatives from the following institutions will visit during the week of November 6th: Assumption College, North Shore Community College, and the University of Maine.  The final college representative visit will be Westfield State University who had to reschedule their original appointment.  Westfield will be here on November 27th.
    • Northern Essex will be available to students one Thursday every month in the back of the Guidance Office during lunches.  Students will have access to an admissions representative where they can ask quesitons and learn more information about NECC.  Additionally, admissions representatives come to HHS for On the Spot Acceptance Days.  The first of these will be held on December 11th.
